What type of chlorine should be used for wastewater chlorination?
When disinfection of secondarily treated wastewater effluent is required and you are using chlorine tablets,
it is important that you use a chlorine tablet that is made from calcium hypochlorite certified for wastewater
disinfection by EPA. These tablets are very reactive and will kill 99% of the bacteria present in the effluent
within 10 minutes. Follow all warning and precaution statements of the chlorine tablet manufacturere to protect
yourself and the system equipment.
WARNING:
DO NOT use swimming pool chlorine tablets in your disinfection system. The chlorine in these tablets
is made from trichlorisocyanuric acid (Tri-Chlor). Tri Chlor tablets disslove more slowly than calcium
hypochlorite and do not thoroughly disinfect the effluent.
Additionally, there is a danger of explosion
with these tablets, since the tablets, which are made to be kept under water-such as in a swimming pool-release
an explosive gas (nitrogen chloride) when they are not totally immersed in water during use-such as in your
septic tank. In addition they are not approved by EPA or the State of Texas for wastewater effluent
disinfection.
ASSC supplies Automatic Bleach Dispenser
We carry an automatic bleach dispenser that we can install on your wastewater system that makes it possible for 6% household bleach (sodium hypochloride) to be used to disinfect your system instead of chlorine tablets. The residential model holds approximately 4 gallons of bleach, which should last a family of 4, with average water use, approximately 4 months. We also carry an automatic bleach dispenser for industrial and commercial use that holds up to 8 gallons of bleach.
For those of you who question the legality of the use of automatic bleach dispensers with the aerobic septic system, in 2002 The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality sent a letter to the manufacturer of the bleach dispenser we carry that states, “we have no objections to the use of this disinfection device in OSSF systems.” In addition, for those of you in Tarrant County, a letter to the area septic installers from the Tarrant County Public Health Department dated 3/13/2008 stated that the manufacturer of the automatic bleach dispenser that we install is the only liquid bleach system approved by Tarrant County for new aerobic septic systems installed in that county.
